Sunwoda’s Consumer Semi-Solid-State Battery Production Exceeds 8 Million Units

Semi-solid-state batteries serve as an important transitional stage before the large-scale commercial adoption of all-solid-state batteries. As a leading enterprise in the consumer electronics battery supply chain, Sunwoda has taken the lead in delivering both “technology + mass production” in the consumer battery sector. At the China International Battery Industry Exhibition, which opened on October 10, Sunwoda showcased its consumer semi-solid-state battery series for the first time and hosted a dedicated technical sharing session.

During the event, Dr. Cai Tingwei, a technical expert at Sunwoda, delivered an in-depth on-site analysis, presenting the company’s innovations, mass-production achievements, and future plans in the semi-solid-state battery field. His insights immediately became a central highlight of the exhibition.

Breakthroughs in Multiple Dimensions to Overcome Traditional Lithium Battery Limitations

According to Dr. Cai, Sunwoda’s consumer battery business is exceptionally strong, offering comprehensive high-end 3C lithium-ion battery solutions. The company stands out in terms of energy density, charging speed, product performance, and structural design. Its semi-solid-state technology pushes the boundaries further by combining innovation in materials, structure, and manufacturing processes, systematically addressing the typical challenges of traditional batteries. These efforts have resulted in four major core advantages:

  • Low-temperature resilience: Thanks to a solid-liquid hybrid mechanism, the battery maintains over 70% capacity and stable discharge performance even at –30°C, overcoming the low-temperature weakness of traditional lithium batteries.
  • Enhanced safety: With a high-strength internal protection network, the battery offers exceptional abuse resistance, enduring crushing, impact, and other rigorous tests to ensure safe usage at all times.
  • Wider temperature range: It breaks the “temperature sensitivity” of conventional lithium batteries, achieving stable operation from –30°C to 60°C, making it suitable for home, outdoor, and industrial auxiliary scenarios.
  • Simplified manufacturing: It overturns the belief that “advanced technology means high cost.” Supported by fully automated production lines (100% automation), the technology can be rapidly scaled from finalized design to mass production.

End-to-End System Support for Rapid Scale-Up

The fast commercialization of Sunwoda’s semi-solid-state batteries comes from a complete and integrated “R&D – pilot testing – mass production” chain. The project officially began in September 2021, and by March 2024—after core technology finalization—the cumulative output surpassed 8 million units, showcasing Sunwoda’s strong technology-industrialization capabilities and large-scale manufacturing strength.

In key technology development, Sunwoda conducted systematic research on the relationship between composition, microstructure, and performance of solid-state electrolyte materials. The company also explored the cooperative mechanisms between solid and liquid phases, identifying optimal pathways for performance enhancement and interface design. Based on this, Sunwoda optimized its slurry preparation process to overcome challenges of ultra-fine powder agglomeration and uniform dispersion, enabling efficient and high-quality semi-solid-state battery production. To date, over 70 patents have been filed related to consumer semi-solid-state battery technologies.

Behind this manufacturing capability lies more than a decade of technical accumulation and global expansion. Since 2011, Sunwoda has invested in independent R&D of consumer battery cells, focusing on polymer and small-power battery development and manufacturing. Its products are widely used in smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables, drones, power tools, smart mobility devices, and smart home equipment, with long-term partnerships established with numerous renowned global brands.

Full-Category Compatibility to Drive Industry Upgrading

Starting with smartphone battery modules, Sunwoda has grown into a global leader in lithium-ion batteries. Its smartphone battery shipments have ranked first worldwide for five consecutive years (with a market share of 34.3%). It is also the world’s second-largest supplier of laptop and tablet batteries. This deep industrial foundation provides strong support for the rapid commercialization of semi-solid-state technology.

Dr. Cai emphasized that the mass production of consumer semi-solid-state batteries has significance far beyond the consumer sector itself—it serves as a critical “commercial stepping stone” for the advancement of both semi-solid and all-solid-state battery technologies. Moving forward, Sunwoda will continue upgrading its solid-state technology to achieve higher energy density (≥1000 Wh/L), higher capacity (≥10 Ah), and higher voltage (≥4.60 V).

The company has already validated the feasibility of large-scale production of semi-solid-state technology in the consumer battery sector. These products are now widely used in smartphones, laptops, wearables, power banks, drones, and other consumer electronics.
