Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory for Energy Storage Begins Trial Production

Tesla announced on December 31 that its Shanghai Megafactory for energy storage successfully passed the final acceptance inspection on December 27. The entire construction process from May to completion took only seven months. The factory has now commenced trial production and is expected to begin mass production early next year.

The Tesla Megafactory for energy storage broke ground on May 23 this year in Shanghai's Lingang area. Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Lingang Group and Tesla signed agreements for China's first batch of commercial Megapack energy storage systems.

According to official information, the Shanghai Megafactory is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2025. Upon full production, it will manufacture 10,000 Megapack units annually, representing nearly 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage capacity.

Previous reports indicate that the project covers approximately 200,000 square meters with a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan. Since the investment intent was confirmed in December last year, the project has utilized Lingang's new project service package for engineering construction.

The Shanghai Megafactory represents Tesla's first energy storage facility outside the United States and marks another major investment in China following the Shanghai Gigafactory, coming a decade after Tesla's initial entry into the Chinese market.

The Shanghai Megafactory will primarily produce the Megapack, Tesla's large-scale commercial energy storage battery system, for global markets. Tesla's current energy storage product lineup includes Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack.
