Chery Debuts Kunpeng Battery, Solid-State Batteries Expected to Hit the Road by 2026

On October 18, Chery held its 2024 Global Innovation Conference, where it unveiled the Kunpeng Battery for the first time. The company also disclosed that solid-state battery development is already underway, with plans for targeted deployment by 2026 and mass production by 2027.

Chery introduced that the Kunpeng Battery will feature three major categories: prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) series, prismatic ternary series, and large cylindrical ternary series.

• The prismatic LFP series offers an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg, fast-charging capability of 1C-6C, and a pure electric range of 200-600 km for BEVs (100-200 km for PHEVs and EREVs).
• The prismatic ternary series provides an energy density of 140-200 Wh/kg, fast-charging capability of 2C-6C, and a pure electric range of 600-800 km for BEVs (150-300 km for PHEVs and EREVs).
• The large cylindrical ternary series delivers an energy density of 140-240 Wh/kg, fast-charging capability of 2C-6C, and a pure electric range of 700-1200 km for BEVs (150-300 km for PHEVs and EREVs).

Additionally, Chery revealed plans to implement all-solid-state batteries in vehicles by 2026, offering a pure electric range exceeding 1,500 km. Regarding specific progress, Chery stated that the energy density of all-solid-state batteries will reach 400 Wh/kg in 2024, increase to 600 Wh/kg in 2025, achieve targeted deployment in 2026, and enter mass production in 2027.

From images displayed at the event, the chamfered all-solid-state battery sample showed no fire or short-circuit incidents and continued to function normally.

Since 2024, Chery has significantly accelerated its power battery sector layout, having established two battery companies so far this year. In April, it founded Anhui Qida Power Battery Technology Co., Ltd., followed by Shijiazhuang Qida Power Battery Technology Co., Ltd. in August, both wholly owned by Wuhu Qida Power Battery System Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Chery Automobile.

Furthermore, Chery's self-developed battery company, Deyi Energy, has established two battery project bases in Anhui's Tongling and Wuhu. The first phase of the Tongling project, with a 5 GWh lithium battery production line, achieved full production capacity in October this year. The second phase has recently commenced, targeting a total capacity of 17 GWh with seven production lines. It will also include an annual 5 GWh energy storage product line, covering platforms such as range-extender 100 Ah, 800V pure electric 125 Ah, and 400V pure electric 175 Ah cells.

Regarding solid-state battery technology, previous information indicated that Anwa New Energy, a joint venture between Chery and Gotion High-Tech, has already launched a semi-solid-state power battery industrialization project. This project focuses on semi-solid-state battery products with energy densities of 300-340 Wh/kg. As for all-solid-state batteries, Chery has not yet provided detailed technical route explanations during this conference.

By debuting the Kunpeng Battery series and announcing solid-state battery development progress at this Global Innovation Conference, Chery is accelerating the construction of a comprehensive ecosystem spanning from battery R&D to vehicle manufacturing through self-built battery companies and deepened technical collaborations. This move strengthens Chery's technological competitiveness in the power battery sector within the new energy vehicle market.
