CATL Releases Car-Specific Aggregated-Phase Battery, 1500km Range

On April 21, at its Super Tech Day, CATL unveiled its flagship technologies, among which the most impressive was the launch of the new Kirin Aggregated-Phase Battery.
In fact, CATL first introduced the Aggregated-Phase technology back in 2023, with a monomer energy density of up to 500Wh/kg. The initial application target was manned aviation. The technology has already completed its first flight verification on a 4-ton commercial aircraft and will soon undergo further verification on aircraft weighing over 8 tons.
This time, CATL has officially applied the Aggregated-Phase technology to passenger vehicles.
The most intuitive data is the high energy density of 350Wh/kg by weight and 760Wh/kg by volume.
The battery uses a specialized high-nickel positive electrode and a new low-expansion silicon-carbon negative electrode technology, improving the energy density by 50Wh/kg. At the same time, it is the first time that aviation-grade titanium alloy materials have been used in the battery casing. Compared to conventional aluminum casings, the thickness is reduced by 60%, the weight is reduced by 30%, the unit strength is increased by 3 times, and the energy density is increased by 20Wh/kg.
What does an energy density of 350Wh/kg mean?
Currently, mainstream ternary lithium batteries have an energy density of 200-250Wh/kg, and LiFePO4 batteries (LFP batteries) range from 140-180Wh/kg. In other words, the energy density of the Aggregated-Phase battery is twice that of LFP and 75% higher than that of ternary lithium. This means that for the same battery weight, the aggregated-phase battery's range can be at least doubled, or it can have the same range while halving the battery weight.
This enables vehicles equipped with CATL's aggregated-phase battery, such as executive sedans, to achieve a range of up to 1500km. Even a full-size SUV can reach a range of 1000km. For example, the distance from Beijing to Nanjing is about 1000+ kilometers, and even with highway range reduced by 30%, it can still make the trip in one go.
According to data released by Beijing's Traffic Committee, the average annual mileage for private cars in Beijing is over 9,500 kilometers, which is roughly 800 kilometers per month. With a 1500km range from the Kirin Aggregated-Phase battery, this is equivalent to nearly two months of commuting for an average user, completely changing the charging frequency from "weekly charging" to "charging once every two months".
Although solid-state batteries are widely recognized as the next-generation ultimate battery technology, it is well-known that there are production challenges—such as interface impedance of solid electrolytes and precision manufacturing requirements—that act as barriers between the laboratory and mass production.
The Aggregated-Phase battery is CATL's "transitional ace" before achieving mass production of solid-state batteries.
The term might sound a bit mystical, but in simple terms, the Aggregated-Phase battery is a technology that lies between traditional liquid batteries and full-solid-state batteries. The electrolyte has transitioned from a liquid state to a semi-solid or gel state, retaining the high ionic conductivity advantages of liquid batteries while eliminating risks of leakage or combustion, completely cutting off safety risks associated with liquid leakage.
With an energy density of 350Wh/kg, the battery is also designed to be lightweight and thin, weighing up to 650kg and occupying only 309L in volume. Compared to a LiFePO4 battery (LFP battery) with the same 1500km range, the Kirin Aggregated-Phase battery reduces the overall vehicle weight by 400kg and reduces the battery compartment volume by 225L.
