CATL Mass Produces 587Ah Cell for Energy Storage

On June 10, CATL held its “Real Energy” 2025 Energy Storage 587 Technology Day in Shanghai, officially announcing the mass production and delivery of its next-generation high-capacity energy storage cell—the 587Ah cell. With this milestone, CATL becomes the first to begin mass production of the 587Ah cell. Guided by the principle of delivering real value, CATL aims to explore optimal solutions for large-format energy storage cells and promote healthy, orderly industry development.
CATL’s 587Ah Cell: Defining the Optimal Solution for Large-Capacity Energy Storage
It is widely recognized in the industry that bigger is not always better when it comes to energy storage cells. After three years of R&D and testing, CATL’s 587Ah cell strikes the ideal balance between regulatory compliance, station compatibility, system integration, and electrochemical performance.
The 587Ah cell also marks a breakthrough in spatial integration efficiency. Designed to fit within a standard 20-foot container and a 1500V PCS voltage and power range, CATL optimized the system layout through precise engineering. This led to a reduction in battery modules and cabinets and a significant decrease in the total number of system components—from 30,000 down to 18,000. The integrated Tianheng Energy Storage System using this cell adheres to the 45-ton hazardous material transport weight limit, avoiding safety hazards and regulatory violations caused by overcapacity and excess weight.
In terms of core project requirements—safety and reliability, energy density, lifecycle degradation, and system efficiency—CATL’s 587Ah cell shows comprehensive improvements. Compared to its predecessor, the lifecycle return on investment (ROI) increases by 5%.
Thanks to world-leading smart manufacturing capabilities, the 587Ah cell also excels in quality and delivery capacity. It achieves a defect rate at the PPB level (parts per billion), a safety control level of 7.5 sigma, a 50% improvement in production throughput, and a 57% reduction in carbon emissions.

True Performance
CATL revolutionized the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) system, increasing the energy density of the 587Ah cell to 434Wh/L—10% higher than the previous generation. System-level energy density improves by 25%. Through innovations in mechanical design, chemistry, and electrode structure, the cell reaches an initial round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 96.5%. Furthermore, its pioneering self-healing anionic electrolyte technology, combined with a multifunctional additive package, ensures extended and reliable cycle life.
True Reliability
Addressing the traditional challenge of lithium battery self-discharge, CATL enhances reliability with innovative material and structural design, accurate data forecasting, and rigorous manufacturing standards. The failure rate of the cell is an order of magnitude lower than that of stacked cells.
True Safety
The 587Ah cell features a “3D defense system” consisting of a safe electrolyte, non-diffusive anode, and heat-resistant separator. These enable the cell to withstand overcharging, thermal runaway, and nail penetration without catching fire or exploding. The cell has also passed stringent national safety tests such as GB/T 36276 and GB 44240.
CATL has continued to iterate on mainstream energy storage standards with products like the 280Ah and 314Ah cells. To date, it has deployed over 256GWh of energy storage across more than 1,000 projects worldwide—all with a zero-incident record.
