CATL Details Its New-Generation 5C Battery: Still 80% Capacity After 1.8 Million Kilometers

According to a report by InsideEVs, on January 30 (local time), CATL introduced its new-generation 5C battery to overseas audiences. The company stated that after undergoing 1,400 charge–discharge cycles in a high-temperature environment of 60°C, the battery can still retain 80% of its capacity. Based on a theoretical range of 600 kilometers per cycle, this translates to a total driving distance of approximately 840,000 kilometers—conditions described as comparable to the extreme summer heat of Dubai.

CATL further noted that in a more ideal operating environment of around 20°C, the battery can complete 3,000 cycles while still maintaining at least 80% capacity, corresponding to a total mileage of about 1.8 million kilometers. This lifespan is said to be six times the industry average, leading the company to conclude that the battery’s durability could even exceed that of the vehicle itself.

According to CATL, these improvements are primarily driven by several key technologies. First, a denser and more uniform cathode coating helps slow down aging. Second, repair additives added to the electrolyte can seal micro-cracks and reduce lithium loss. In addition, a “temperature-responsive agent” sprayed onto the surface of the cell separator further extends battery life.

At the same time, CATL has upgraded its battery management system (BMS). When a specific area of the battery pack experiences excessive temperatures, the system can precisely direct coolant to the affected location, thereby “significantly extending” the overall lifespan of the battery pack and making daily use of electric vehicles more worry-free and convenient.

However, CATL has not disclosed when this upgraded battery will enter mass production, nor has it specified which vehicle models or commercial projects it will be applied to first.
