BYD Officially Launches the Second-Generation Blade Battery and Flash-Charging Technology

On March 5, 2026, BYD held the launch event for its second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology at the Shenzhen Universiade Center Stadium. The event, themed “Flash Charging China, Changing the World,” marked a major milestone in the advancement of power battery technology.
After six years of development, the sharpened blade returns.
The second-generation BYD Blade Battery achieves five major technological breakthroughs: flash charging at normal temperatures, flash charging in low temperatures, enhanced safety, extended driving range, and longer lifespan. These innovations comprehensively address key challenges faced by the new energy vehicle industry—such as range anxiety, slow charging, and poor low-temperature charging performance—pushing power battery technology into a new era and leading the global new energy vehicle industry into the age of flash charging.
Today, the electric mobility experience is still affected by several real-world pain points: drivers become anxious when the battery still has half its charge remaining, long queues at charging stations during holiday travel have become common, and charging in low temperatures can be extremely frustrating. It achieves comprehensive excellence across five dimensions: flash charging at normal temperatures, flash charging in low temperatures, superior safety, long driving range, and extended lifespan—creating one of the world’s most advanced power batteries and solving the last major challenges of the electrification era.
Flash Charging at Normal Temperatures: 5 Minutes to Recharge, 9 Minutes to Fully Charge
Thanks to the full-chain lithium-ion ultra-fast conduction technology system, the second-generation Blade Battery delivers unprecedented charging speed under normal temperature conditions. It can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in only 9 minutes—achieving the fastest mass-production charging speed in the world and offering users the ultimate flash-charging experience: “5 minutes to recharge, 9 minutes to full.”
Low-Temperature Flash Charging: Only 3 Minutes Longer at -30°C
With the direct refrigerant cooling and heating technology for power batteries, the second-generation Blade Battery maintains excellent flash-charging performance even in extremely cold conditions. At temperatures as low as -30°C, it can charge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes—truly achieving flash charging in extreme cold comparable to that at normal temperatures.
Ultimate Safety Exceeding the New National Standard
The second-generation Blade Battery is equipped with a high-safety “endoskeleton” battery pack structure featuring an integrated high-strength frame for comprehensive protection. - World’s first “Simultaneous Flash Charging and Needle Penetration Test”: No thermal runaway, no smoke, and no fire. Even after 500 flash-charging cycles, the battery still successfully passed the simultaneous flash-charging and needle penetration test with no thermal runaway, smoke, or fire.
- Ultra-demanding “Thermal Propagation Test” beyond the new national standard: After simultaneously triggering short circuits in four cells, the battery pack showed no thermal propagation, no fire, and no explosion.
- High-energy “Bottom Impact Test”: In a bottom-impact test with force ten times higher than the new national standard, the battery pack remained stable with no fire and no explosion.
Longer Range: Faster Charging and Greater Distance
The second-generation Blade Battery significantly enhances vehicle driving range. Compared with the previous generation, its energy density increases by more than 5%, enabling pure electric vehicles to achieve ranges exceeding 1,000 km. The new Denza Z9GT equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery can reach a maximum range of 1,036 km.
Long Lifespan: Flash Charging Without Compromising Durability
Technologies such as the ultra-thin high-strength SEI film and dynamically self-repairing electrode interfaces, combined with the creation of a “high-speed lithium-ion channel” and an “all-temperature intelligent thermal management system,” enable the second-generation Blade Battery to generate less heat and dissipate heat more efficiently and evenly. As a result, flash charging has minimal impact on battery lifespan.
